Our research with design professionals with various background revealed that even simple projects can take 5-6 hours, while complex book layouts might take weeks, with multiple revision cycles creating additional overhead.
We're targeting early-career creatives aged 20-30 who are transitioning from academic to professional work. These quality-focused yet budget-conscious professionals often combine different software tools to compensate for skill gaps, creating inefficient workflows. By leveraging large language models, Typer simplifies the technical aspects of typesetting and layout, allowing designers to focus on creative decision-making rather than technical constraints.

Typer is built as a web application incorporating advanced large language models for text processing, formatting, and layout assistance. The platform provides an intuitive interface that reduces the learning curve associated with traditional publishing software while maintaining professional-grade capabilities. Our technology specifically targets the automation of tedious proofreading tasks, cross-platform compatibility issues, and repetitive formatting work.
Through in-depth interviews with many design professionals, we uncovered several critical insights:
Time Investment Reality: Our initial assumption that layout design is time-consuming was confirmed, with simple posters taking 5-6 hours and complex book layouts requiring weeks. We discovered that the timeline is affected by multiple variables including page count, content type (photos, charts, illustrations), and design complexity. The process typically involves multiple rounds of drafts beyond just technical layout work.
Software Learning & Usage Patterns: We found that while senior designers have established workflows, junior designers tend to use different software combinations to compensate for their developing skill sets. The learning curve for professional tools ranges from 2 weeks to 1 year, with community resources being crucial for mastering these tools. Tool proficiency is directly tied to project complexity.
Pricing Preferences: We discovered a strong preference for perpetual licenses over subscription models among professionals paying personally, which was an unexpected finding. Education and enterprise pricing emerged as significant factors in tool selection, indicating potential partnership opportunities with institutions.
